Filming for Gloria Mills’ latest film has just begun, but it’s already come to a standstill. Not only is the capricious leading actress driving the entire crew crazy, but she also experiences a deep personal crisis. Instead of being admired as a film star, Gloria finally wants to be noticed as what she really is – “a woman and nothing else”. Reporter Axel Stiftelmeyer, alias Swift, has sneaked onto the film set incognito and is thrilled when he witnesses Gloria’s outburst. If he could show his readership the diva as the public has never seen her before – as a real person! – he could surely secure a permanent position on the editorial staff. With the help of his Viennese friend, make-up artist Theodor Herlinger, he disguises himself as an old man and pretends to have been injured by Gloria’s chauffeur. The diva’s invitation to dinner, extorted as compensation, seems to him like the long-awaited gateway to heaven. Axel’s girlfriend Jessie Leyland, assistant to Gloria’s producer Scott, is less than thrilled to be stood up once again for a supposedly “big deal”. When she finds out that this time, the “big deal” is the diva herself, she decides to follow Axel to Gloria’s villa. Against his will, Theodor Herlinger, who has secretly loved Jessie for a long time, joins them.
Before the incredulous eyes of his rival reporter Randy Racebottom, Axel enters Gloria’s villa, where his arrival has been completely forgotten. Gloria, rejected by her current lover Prince Tino Taciano of Transylvania, is in no mood to receive visitors. When Axel reveals himself to be a journalist, Gloria has him arrested by Detective Inspector Morton, who is on-site to protect the diva’s valuable diamond. Axel manages to escape the inspector and return to Gloria’s side just in time to save her from making a big mistake. Just as the two are getting closer, an alarm interrupts their intimacy: the diamond has been stolen and potential culprits are appearing everywhere. In an impromptu summary trial, various thief masks are removed, and newly discovered feelings finally revealed.
